Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Discover why switching from the Unum Disability Plan to the Aflac Disability Plan is a smart decision.

  • Q: Why should I switch disability plans if I am happy with what I have?

A:  As your Union Benefit Representative, we just want you to have the BEST disability coverage available to you. This new Aflac Disability Plan was specifically designed just for Federal Employee Union Members so you could have more benefits without incurring more cost.

  • Q: Are members required to convert their UNUM policy to Aflac? If they choose not to convert, will they be able to continue to pay via allotment for the life of their policy?

A:  No. AFGE members are not required to convert their existing UNUM coverage, but there will be a time when the UNUM bank account is closed, requiring members to set up a monthly draft. You can learn more about this concern by contacting your Union Benefit Representative.

  • Q: Is the pre-existing limitation waived for conversions?

A:  UNUM policyholders that switch to this new and better Aflac Disability Plan will receive credit for the elimination period that had already been satisfied with the previous policy. If a member has a UNUM policy that is 12 months old, and at the time of application the agent enters the original policy number and date, they will have no additional waiting period for pre-existing conditions on the new Aflac coverage. Policies that are less than 12 months old will get credit for the original UNUM policy date but the total wait for pre-existing conditions will never be more than 12 months after the UNUM policy date.

  • Q: What are the eligibility requirements to apply?

A:  You must be an AFGE Union member to enroll. If you are currently not an AFGE Union member, Benefit Architects can assist you on how to apply and become a member.

Full-time employment (19 hours per week minimum), is required and must be actively at work at the time of enrollment, plus shall meet salary requirements.

    Member issue ages: 17-74.

  • Q: Will my premiums increase now that I am older?

A:  No, all UNUM policyholders will be able to switch to the upgraded Aflac Disability Plan without paying a premium increase due to age. If you purchased a UNUM policy at age 35 and you are now 51, you still pay the 35-year-old rate. How awesome is that!

  • Q: Does the Aflac Disability Plan cover all disabilities?

A:  The plan does NOT cover ON-THE-JOB accidents, mental health disease, elective or cosmetic procedures.

  • Q: What conditions are considered a disability?

A:  Off-the-job accidents such as car accidents or slip and fall, an illness like cancer or shingles, and surgery for knee replacement or heart procedure.

  • Q: Can I work part-time and still collect disability?

A:  The Partial Disability Benefit helps you transition back into full-time work after suffering a disability. If you remain partially disabled and are only able to work earning less than 80 percent of your pre-disability income at any job, this plan will still pay you 50 percent of your selected monthly benefit for up to the maximum partial disability benefit period of 3 months after the elimination period. You do not have to have received the total disability benefit to receive the Partial Disability Benefit.

  • Q: How fast does Aflac process disability claims?

A:  In general, assuming paperwork is complete and additional information is not required, disability claims are paid within 5 business days.

  • Q: If I am over age 72, am I covered?

A:  Yes, the policy is valid through age 75.

  • Q: Does this policy cover my spouse or other family members?
